LD Update: USL Pro Game Night; Zinho appointment; PDL/W-League signings

Three games... Three goals... Three road wins…

Charlotte Eagles 0:1 Rochester Rhinos – For the second consecutive week the Rochester Rhinos squeezed out a victory against the Eagles, this time in Charlotte. This time the Rhinos got the goal on their own with former Real Salt Lake and New York Red Bulls striker Conor Chinn, who tallied his first professional goal in the 18th minute. Kristian Nicht picked up his fourth consecutive shutout with two saves. It was not all bad news for Charlotte though as the Lady Eagles picked up a season-opening victory.  – MORE

Antigua Barracuda 0:1 Orlando City – Last week it was the Rhinos with an own-goal victory, this week it was Orlando doing the same. With an adjusted lineup due to Caribbean Football Union tournament action this week, the Barracudas were still a danger to the visiting defending champions, sending two shots off the post in the first half. Jamie Watson’s initial shot was stopped, but the rebound effort by Max Griffin as inadvertently turned into the goal by defender Troy Dublin in the 89th minute, spoiling the anticipated draw. – MORE

Dayton Dutch Lions 0:1 Los Angeles Blues – New addition Bright Dike, on loan from the Portland Timbers, was tested early by the home side, but earned the Blues a penalty in the 66the minute. However, Allan Russell’s attempt was put over the crossbar. Russell, though, made up for the error in the 79th minute when he slammed in a loose ball on a corner. Dayton nearly equalized late, but saw Joel DeLass’ 20-yard effort tipped by goalkeeper Jose Miranda off the post and out. – MORE

USL Pro News: The Mayor of Orlando verbally recognized and applauded Orlando City for their commitment to the city - a moment of irony given that the club is only in its second season in Florida after spending two as the Austin Aztex in Texas (though they promote the Lions as a new club)...

Zinho named Flamengo Executive Director: The former World Cup champion and USL First Division standout for Miami FC (now Fort Lauderdale Strikers), Zinho, was announced as the new Executive Director for one of his former Brazilian clubs, Flamengo.

PDL News: The Carolina Dynamo announced the team's roster, which includes 18 players back from its South Atlantic Division championship campaign last year... Hoping to end the club's poor start, the Des Moines Menace announced the return of third-year player Lebogang Moloto of South Africa. He was the team's leading scorer in 2010 and has been dominant at Lindsey Wilson where he is the reigning NAIA MVP, leading the school to its second national title in three years... Fredericksburg Hotspur added some former professional and international talent to the roster with the addition of Tishan Hanley (Harrisburg City Islanders, St Kitts & Nevis), Don Smart (FC New York) and Travis Mulraine (San Jose Earthquakes & T&T), who will also serve as assistant coach... The North Sound SeaWolves added four players, including local PDL veteran Mark Conrad, who has played for Tacoma Tide, Kitsap Pumas and Washington Crossfire... The league honored Vancouver Whitecaps forward Carlos Marquez as the PDL Player of the Week in its first edition of the Team of the Week for the 2012 season.

W-League News: The Dayton Dutch Lions announced that longtime Dutch professional player Fernando Derveld will be the team's head coach after a 15-year career in the Netherlands (Willem II, Heerenveen, more), Denmark (Odense BK, Esjberg FB) and England (Norwich City, West Bromwich Albion)... The Northern Virginia Majestics announced the return of four players from college.
