The weekend's lower division action features two first-ever meetings as well as both Harrisburg and Rochester playing their home openers.
NASL Previews: The thrilling 3-3 duel between the Atlanta Silverbacks and Minnesota Stars last weekend will have an immediate rematch, this time in Minnesota. Last week's match ended a three-game scoring drought against the Stars for Atlanta, who were swept in four games last year by an aggregate score of 9-1, but kept the Silverbacks winless with four draws in as many games... Saturday's other contest will be the first-ever meeting between the Tampa Bay Rowdies and the expansion San Antonio Scorpions.
The weekend wraps up with FC Edmonton still looking for their first victory when they play host to the Carolina RailHawks Sunday. Carolina dominated the season series a year ago with a 3-0-1 record and an aggregate tally of 8-2.
USL Pro Previews: There are three games Friday evening. First, the Charlotte Eagles look to end a five-game winless streak against the City Islanders when they visit Harrisburg. After going 0-2-1 last year, the Eagles fell, 2-1, in their earlier meeting this year in Charlotte with Mauricio Salles getting their first goal of the year after three scoreless games. It was the equalizer after Andrew Welker's opener, but JT Noone provided the winner in the second half... In Charleston, the Battery will face second-year Antigua Barracudas, coming off a 3-0 loss in Wilmington Wednesday, for the first time... Wilmington has since traveled across the country to play Friday and Sunday against the Los Angeles Blues. They swept the season series a year ago with 2-1 and 4-2 victories at home.
Charlotte plays its second in as many days when the Eagles travel to Rochester Saturday to play the unbeaten Rhinos. Charlotte won the season series last year with a 3-0 road win and 2-2 home draw... Then the Richmond Kickers meet up with Dayton Dutch Lions, whom they dominated in four games last year with a 12-1 aggregate score in the three league contests and a 4-1 result in the US Open Cup... Saturday's other contest features the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on the road against Orlando City, whom they were scoreless against in a 0-0 draw and 1-0 loss a year ago.
USASA Region IV Tournament: The draw may be set for the first two rounds of the US Open Cup, but the final two participants will not be decided until the final qualifying tournament this weekend. Seven teams from California and an eighth from El Paso, Texas representing New Mexico will battle for the two berths in Ontario, Calif.
NASL News: The league honored Atlanta Silverbacks striker Reinaldo Navia as the NASL Player of the Month. He currently leads the league in scoring with five goals... The Tampa Bay Rowdies announced the signing of rookie Evans Frimpong, a Chicago Fire draft pick out of the University of Delaware. The club also lost defender Josh Suggs, whose loan was recalled by the San Jose Earthquakes.
USL Pro News: Due to stadium conflicts, the LA Blues had to relocate Friday's game against Wilmington. Due to the change, the game at Fullerton College will feature free admission.
PDL Signings: The Jersey Express unveiled their roster for the 2012 season... The Austin Aztex did the same, revealing a roster made up largely of players with connections to the area or attend Texas universities... Two former professional players are returning to play for the Long Island Rough Riders with ex-Rochester Rhinos Danny Kramer set for his fifth season with the team and ex-New England Rev Gary Flood back for his fourth.
W-League Signing: The Santa Clarita Blue Heat announced the addition of Long Beach State star Nadia Link to the roster... The Vancouver Whitecaps added four collegiate standouts to the roster, including recent Hammarby IF (Sweden) defender Brittany Galindo.
