LD Update: Previews, honors, signings & Cups

NASL Preview: The Carolina RailHawks play host to the Fort Lauderdale Strikers Wednesday. The contest is the first meeting this season after the two split the season series a year ago with two victories each. Carolina won both matches at home by a two-goal margin while falling on the road by one goal in both.

USL Pro Preview: Antigua Barracuda visit the Wilmington Hammerheads Wednesday in the first of two games in the Carolinas. It is the first trip to the States this season. Last season Antigua played host to the Hammerheads, dropping both games in one-goal decisions, 1-0 and 3-2 in early July.

USL Pro Honors: The league announced Charlotte Eagles defender Luke Williams as the Player of the Week as well as the accompanying Team of the Week.

PDL Signings: Vancouver Whitecaps U23 announced 11 players, seven of whom have previously played in the club's development system. In addition, the Whitecaps announced that up to three MLS players may play with the team per contest... Seattle Sounders U23 named five University of Washington players to its roster... The Ocean City Nor'easters revealed the final six additions to their 2012 roster, adding players from throughout colleges on the east coast.

W-League Signing: The Vancouver Whitecaps announced that the Canadian international trio of Melanie Booth, Kaylyn Kyle and Brittany Timko have signed with the club...

US Open Cup: The clubs from the lower divisions learned the First and Second Round pairings for the 99th edition of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Amateur flight clubs will face one another in the opening round before facing opposition from USL Pro and the NASL in the Second Round. Major League Soccer teams play the round two winners.

Amway Canadian Championship: FC Edmonton of the NASL begins its quest to become the second lower division side to win the competition since the Montreal Impact accomplished the feat in the inaugural edition in 2008. Edmonton will face MLS Vancouver Whitecaps in the semifinal round, hosting the first contest Wednesday and with the second leg at BC Place next Wednesday. The winner faces either Toronto FC or Montreal Impact, both MLS, in the Championship Series May 16 and 23. Toronto FC, which blanked Edmonton 3-0 and 1-0 by a year ago in the semifinals, has won the past three years, advancing to the CONCACAF Champions League.
